THE WOLF KNEW HER SECRET
The war-wolf was not guarding the castle from her. He was guarding her from something outside.
The arrow remained buried in the iron gate.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Elara stared at it.
Then another arrow struck.
This one landed so close to her face that the feathers brushed her cheek.
She recoiled.
The war-wolf immediately shifted his body, placing himself between her and the gate.
A low growl rolled through the castle.
Not the sound of an ordinary animal.
It was the sound of something ancient.
Something furious.
Darius turned toward his guards.
“Seal every entrance.”
The guards moved instantly.
“Your Majesty,” one of them shouted, “the eastern wall is under attack!”
Another voice came from the courtyard.
“They’re inside the outer grounds!”
Darius’s face became cold.
“How many?”
“Too many to count.”
Elara looked at him.
“Who are they?”
Darius didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he approached her.
“Stay beside Raven.”
“I don’t know who Raven is.”
Darius looked at the enormous wolf.
“You do.”
Elara frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Before Darius could answer, Raven turned toward her.
The silver in his eyes brightened.
And Elara suddenly felt something.
A memory.
Not hers.
A forest.
Snow falling.
A young wolf running beside a little girl.
The girl was laughing.
Her dark hair was tangled by the wind.
She held a silver pendant.
Then the scene changed.
Fire.
Screaming.
A woman carrying the little girl.
A man shouting.
A black wolf standing over them.
Then a final image—
a massive gate closing.
Elara gasped.
She stumbled backward.
Darius caught her.
“What did you see?”
She pushed his hand away.
“You know.”
His expression tightened.
“You saw something.”
“My childhood.”
Darius went silent.
“You know my childhood,” Elara whispered.
“I know part of it.”
“Tell me everything.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because if I tell you now, you may never trust me again.”
Elara laughed bitterly.
“You rejected me in front of an entire kingdom. I think you’ve already given me enough reasons not to trust you.”
Pain flashed across his face.
But before he could respond, a horn sounded outside.
Darius turned.
“They’re here.”
The great doors burst open.
A dozen armored wolves rushed into the courtyard.
Their armor was black.
Their eyes were covered by silver masks.
And at their center stood a man with white hair.
Councilor Varrick.
Elara had seen him three years ago.
He had been one of the men laughing when Darius rejected her.
Now he smiled.
“Your Majesty,” Varrick called.
Darius stepped forward.
“Varrick.”
“You should have listened to the council.”
Darius’s eyes narrowed.
“Leave.”
“I can’t.”
“Then I’ll make you.”
Varrick smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
His gaze shifted.
Straight toward Elara.
“You brought her back.”
Elara felt the pendant burn against her chest.
Varrick’s smile widened.
“After all these years.”
Darius moved in front of her.
“You will not touch her.”
Varrick laughed.
“You still don’t understand what she is.”
Darius’s expression hardened.
“I know exactly what she is.”
“No.”
Varrick shook his head.
“You know what she could become.”
Silence.
Elara’s heart pounded.
“What is he talking about?”
Darius didn’t answer.
Varrick did.
“She is the last Moonblood.”
The words echoed across the courtyard.
Elara looked at Darius.
“Is that true?”
His silence was enough.
She stepped away from him.
“You knew.”
Darius nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You don’t get to decide what I deserve to know.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Darius looked at her.
His voice dropped.
“Because your mother asked me to.”
Elara froze.
“My mother?”
“She came to me three years before I rejected you.”
Elara’s breath caught.
“She was alive?”
Darius nodded.
“Your mother is alive.”
The world seemed to tilt beneath Elara’s feet.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“She disappeared.”
“She disappeared because people were hunting her.”
“Who?”
Darius looked toward Varrick.
“The same people who are standing outside this castle.”
Elara’s eyes filled with tears.
“My mother is alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Darius hesitated.
“She is beyond the northern mountains.”
“Take me to her.”
“I will.”
“Now.”
Darius shook his head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because first we have to survive tonight.”
An explosion shook the castle.
Stone rained from the ceiling.
People screamed.
Raven roared.
The wolf charged toward the broken gate.
The masked soldiers rushed forward.
Darius transformed.
Bone cracked.
His body shifted.
Fur erupted across his skin.
Within seconds, the Alpha King became a massive dark wolf.
His eyes burned gold.
The courtyard exploded into chaos.
Elara watched as wolves collided.
Claws.
Fangs.
Blood.
Howls.
Raven fought beside Darius.
But something strange happened.
Whenever Raven moved toward an enemy, he always looked back at Elara first.
As if making sure she was safe.
Then one masked soldier slipped through the fighting.
He raised a silver blade.
Straight toward Elara.
She saw it too late.
“ELARA!”
Darius lunged.
But Raven was faster.
The war-wolf slammed into the attacker.
The blade flew into the air.
It landed beside Elara.
She looked down.
The weapon was glowing.
Her pendant reacted.
Silver light exploded from her chest.
The entire courtyard went silent.
Every wolf stopped fighting.
Every soldier froze.
Every torch extinguished at once.
Elara stood in the darkness.
Silver light flowed through her veins.
The pendant lifted from her chest.
And somewhere beneath the earth, a heartbeat began.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Varrick’s face turned white.
“No.”
Darius transformed back.
He stared at Elara.
“Don’t move.”
Elara looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because the castle is waking up.”
“What does that mean?”
Darius didn’t answer.
The stone floor beneath her cracked.
A glowing symbol appeared.
A crescent moon surrounded by seven wolves.
Varrick whispered:
“The Moon Throne.”
Elara looked at the symbol.
“What is happening to me?”
Darius stepped toward her.
“Your blood is remembering who you are.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You will.”
“No. I want answers now.”
Darius reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
“You lied to me.”
“I hid the truth.”
“That is still a lie.”
Darius closed his eyes.
“You’re right.”
Varrick suddenly shouted:
“Kill her!”
The masked soldiers surged forward.
Darius turned.
“NO!”
Raven attacked first.
The war-wolf moved with terrifying speed.
He tore through the first line of soldiers.
But there were too many.
Elara backed toward the throne room.
Then she heard something.
A voice.
A woman’s voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
“Elara.”
She froze.
“Mama?”
The voice came again.
“Follow the wolf.”
Elara looked at Raven.
The war-wolf stared back.
Then he turned toward a hidden doorway behind the throne.
He walked to it.
And scratched the stone.
Darius looked shocked.
“No.”
Elara approached.
“What is behind there?”
Darius whispered:
“A room that hasn’t been opened in twenty-two years.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother sealed it.”
Elara placed her palm against the stone.
The door opened.
A staircase descended into darkness.
The voice came again.
“Elara…”
She stepped forward.
Darius caught her wrist.
“Don’t.”
She looked at him.
“You said you wanted to protect me.”
“I do.”
“Then come with me.”
He stared at her.
Then nodded.
Together, they descended.
Raven followed.
At the bottom was a circular chamber.
In the center stood a stone pedestal.
On it rested a crown.
Not gold.
Not silver.
Black crystal with a crescent moon carved into its center.
Elara approached.
The moment she touched it, the chamber filled with light.
And a woman appeared.
Not a ghost.
A memory.
A younger Lyra.
Elara’s mother.
Elara covered her mouth.
“Mama…”
The memory looked directly at her.
“My little moon.”
Tears streamed down Elara’s face.
“I thought you were dead.”
Lyra’s image trembled.
“I had to let you believe that.”
“Why?”
“Because if they knew you survived, they would come for you.”
“Who?”
Lyra looked toward Darius.
Her expression changed.
“Elara, listen carefully.”
Darius stepped forward.
Lyra’s voice became urgent.
“The man you think is your enemy is the only reason you are alive.”
Elara turned toward Darius.
“What does that mean?”
Lyra continued.
“He rejected you because the bond was visible.”
Elara stared.
“What?”
“Your mate bond appeared when you were young. The council saw it. They knew that if you ever became his queen, your blood would awaken.”
Darius lowered his eyes.
Lyra continued.
“So he broke the bond publicly.”
Elara’s voice cracked.
“You let him?”
“I begged him to.”
She looked at Darius.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I would hate you.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I would think you never wanted me.”
Darius swallowed.
“Yes.”
Elara’s tears fell.
“And you did it anyway.”
Darius’s voice was barely audible.
“Because loving you meant accepting that you might hate me.”
Silence.
The memory of Lyra flickered.
“There is one thing neither of you knows.”
Darius looked up.
Lyra continued.
“The rejection did not destroy the bond.”
Elara’s heart stopped.
“It transferred it.”
Darius froze.
“To whom?”
Lyra looked directly at him.
“The Moon Goddess didn’t give Elara another mate.”
She smiled sadly.
“She gave her the same mate.”
Elara stared at Darius.
Darius closed his eyes.
Lyra whispered:
“Darius was always yours.”
The chamber went silent.
Then a terrible sound came from above.
A howl.
Not Raven.
Not Darius.
Something older.
Something beneath the castle.
Raven suddenly growled.
Darius reached for his sword.
Elara turned toward the stairs.
“What is that?”
Darius looked terrified.
“The first wolf.”
“What?”
“The creature from which every Alpha bloodline descended.”
Elara’s pendant began to glow.
The crown rose from its pedestal.
And the voice of something ancient filled the chamber.
“THE MOONBLOOD HAS RETURNED.”
The castle shook.
Stone shattered.
Varrick’s voice echoed from above.
“Take her alive!”
Elara looked at Darius.
He stepped between her and the stairs.
“I need you to trust me.”
She wiped her tears.
“I don’t know if I can.”
“You don’t have to.”
He raised his sword.
“Just stay behind me.”
Raven moved beside him.
For the first time, Elara saw them together.
The Alpha King.
The war-wolf.
Both willing to die for her.
Then the staircase exploded.
A gigantic black creature emerged from the darkness.
Its eyes were silver.
Its teeth were enormous.
And on its forehead was the same crescent moon that burned beneath Elara’s skin.
The creature looked at her.
Then lowered its head.
Darius whispered:
“It’s chosen you.”
Varrick appeared behind the creature, holding a silver dagger against his own palm.
He smiled.
“Then let’s see if the last Moon Queen can survive her first command.”
He cut his hand.
Blood hit the stone.
Every wolf in the castle screamed.
And suddenly, every pair of eyes turned toward Elara.
She felt something inside her awaken.
Something powerful.
Something hungry.
Something that had been sleeping for eighteen years.
Her eyes turned silver.
The crown flew toward her.
And before Elara could catch it—
Darius suddenly dropped to his knees.
Not because he was wounded.
Because the Moon Court had recognized its queen.
And outside the chamber, hundreds of wolves began to bow.
But Varrick was smiling.
Because this was exactly what he had been waiting for.
He hadn’t brought an army to kill the Moon Queen.
He had brought an army to force her power awake.
And the moment Elara’s crown touched her head, the first wolf opened its mouth and spoke in a human voice:
“Daughter of Lyra…”
Elara froze.
The creature’s silver eyes fixed on her.
“…your father is not dead.”
