“LEAVE BEFORE SUNSET… OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES”
The Alpha King had ordered her to leave his castle.
But nobody expected what happened next.
The moment the rejected Omega stepped through the iron gates with a small bag in her hand, the Alpha King’s legendary war-wolf threw himself across the entrance—
and refused to move.
Not for the guards.
Not for the Alpha King.
Not even when the beast was commanded to stand aside.
The entire kingdom watched in stunned silence.
Because everyone knew one terrifying fact about that wolf.
He had never obeyed anyone.
Until her.
Three years earlier, Elara had arrived at Blackthorn Castle believing her life was finally about to change.
She was an Omega from a poor mountain pack. Quiet. Kind. Unwanted.
She had spent most of her life being told she was too weak, too ordinary, and too insignificant to matter.
Then she discovered that her mate was none other than Darius Blackthorn—the most feared Alpha King in the northern territories.
Tall.
Powerful.
Cold enough to make grown Alphas lower their eyes.
His name alone could stop a war.
And when Elara first stood before him beneath the silver moon, she believed the Moon Goddess had finally given her something beautiful.
She was wrong.
Darius rejected her.
Not privately.
Not gently.
In front of the entire royal court.
“I do not accept you as my mate.”
The words shattered her.
But worse came afterward.
His council laughed.
His nobles whispered.
And Darius simply turned away as though her heart breaking were nothing more than an inconvenience.
Elara disappeared from his court that same night.
She never begged.
Never pleaded.
Never asked him to change his mind.
She walked away carrying nothing except a small silver pendant her mother had left her before disappearing years ago.
She thought that was the end.
It wasn’t.
Three years later, Darius summoned her back.
And now she stood inside Blackthorn Castle again.
Older.
Calmer.
And completely different.
The girl who once trembled before him was gone.
Elara looked at the Alpha King across the throne room.
“You summoned me,” she said quietly.
Darius’s jaw tightened.
“I did.”
“Why?”
His golden eyes flickered.
“You need to leave.”
Silence.
Elara stared at him.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I came because you ordered me here.”
“And now I am ordering you away.”
His voice was cold.
Too cold.
But something in his expression was different.
Fear.
Elara noticed it.
“You’re afraid of something.”
Darius’s face hardened.
“I am afraid of what will happen if you stay.”
Before she could answer, a violent howl shook the castle.
Every candle flame trembled.
The doors of the throne room flew open.
A massive black wolf entered.
He was enormous—larger than any normal wolf Elara had ever seen.
Scars covered his shoulders.
One ear was torn.
His eyes burned a strange silver-gold.
The guards immediately raised their weapons.
“Stand down!” Darius roared.
The wolf ignored him.
The beast walked directly toward Elara.
One step.
Then another.
Elara didn’t move.
The wolf stopped inches from her.
The entire throne room held its breath.
Then something impossible happened.
The great war-wolf lowered his head.
And bowed.
Not to the Alpha King.
To Elara.
A gasp swept through the room.
Darius went completely still.
“Impossible,” one councilor whispered.
Elara looked down at the enormous creature.
His muzzle touched her palm.
Warm.
Gentle.
Almost familiar.
She slowly reached out and touched his head.
The wolf closed his eyes.
Darius’s expression changed.
For the first time since Elara had known him, the Alpha King looked genuinely terrified.
“Get away from him,” he said.
Elara looked up.
“Why?”
“Because that wolf has killed twenty-three men.”
The wolf growled.
But not at Elara.
At Darius.
The Alpha King took one step forward.
“Raven.”
The wolf bared his teeth.
“Raven, move.”
He didn’t.
Darius’s voice dropped.
“That’s an order.”
Still nothing.
The guards exchanged frightened glances.
Elara looked between them.
“Why won’t he obey you?”
Darius didn’t answer.
Instead, he stared at the silver pendant around her neck.
His face went pale.
“Where did you get that?”
Elara touched the pendant.
“My mother gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Before she disappeared.”
Darius’s eyes widened.
He stepped closer.
“Your mother…”
His voice almost broke.
“What was her name?”
“Lyra.”
The castle fell silent.
Darius looked as though someone had struck him.
“No.”
Elara frowned.
“What?”
He shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
“What is?”
Darius stared at the pendant again.
Then at the wolf.
Then at Elara.
And suddenly the war-wolf began to howl.
Not a warning.
Not a threat.
A cry of recognition.
Somewhere deep beneath the castle, something answered.
A second howl.
Then a third.
The walls began to tremble.
Elara’s pendant suddenly grew warm against her chest.
A thin silver light appeared beneath her skin.
Darius whispered a word that made every councilor in the room drop to their knees.
“Moonblood.”
Elara’s heart stopped.
She looked at him.
“What did you call me?”
Darius stepped backward.
The Alpha King who had once rejected her now looked at her as if she were the most dangerous person alive.
“You were never supposed to come back here.”
Elara’s voice shook.
“Why?”
Darius swallowed.
“Because three years ago, when I rejected you…”
He looked toward the war-wolf.
“…I wasn’t rejecting you.”
Elara stared at him.
“Then what were you doing?”
Darius’s face hardened with pain.
“I was trying to save your life.”
The gates behind Elara suddenly slammed shut.
The war-wolf moved.
He placed his enormous body directly across the only exit.
And for the first time, everyone understood.
He wasn’t keeping Elara out.
He was keeping her in.
The war-wolf was not guarding the castle from her. He was guarding her from something outside.
And that was when the first arrow struck the iron gate.
