Dame Judi Dench leads tributes to Sir Patrick Stewart

namht

that the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter than we think.

An unmistakable appearance and smooth sonnerous voice, Sir Patrick Stewart lived a life any actor would dream of.

I may be able to help you find some answers.

From humble beginnings, he scaled the heights of Hollywood.

Stars who worked with him along the way remember it fondly.

I have lovely memories of him and what a good actor.

What a really good actor.

Dion only acted with him once, but um sweet man.

I’m very shocked to hear that.

Though the actor found himself in the upper echelons of the industry, he never took it for granted.

I never ever ever cease to get a thrill that Patrick Stewart from Murfield, Yorkshire is driving through the gates of Paramount Studios and a man in a uniform is saying, “Good morning, Mr. Stewart”.

He adored the screen, but his first love was the stage.

Acting colleague and longtime friend Sir Ian Mckllen said Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire.

He wore his heart on his sleeve which made him a man to rely on to admire and in my case love.

He never forsook his origins and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic was his appointment as chancellor of Huddersfield University.

It was a role which allowed him to share decades worth of wisdom.

He did a lot of master classes.

It was his humanity and the way he worked with our students, the way he encouraged our students and inspired them that I think will stay with us most.

In 2016, he met with royalty to highlight his long-standing work as an advocate for a domestic abuse charity in which he shared stories of violence from his own childhood.

It was extraordinary to get a man speaking out about domestic abuse and to speak so honestly and openly about his own childhood um you know really make an incredible difference and without a shovel without save lives when you close your eyes.

Sir Patrick Stewart will make his final film appearance later this year when Avengers Doomsday is released, sharing the screen with someone he knew very well.

Rashid Dava, News at 10.

It is a place where we can watch your people.

It is the role for which Sir Patrick Stewart will always be best remembered.

You have taught us there is nothing beyond our reach, not even the stars.

For many, John Luke Picard, their favorite Star Trek commander.

Oh, no.

I know Hamlet.

And what he might say with irony, I say with conviction.

What a piece of work is man.

His journey to that famous spaceship began here at the house in Murfield, West Yorkshire, where he grew up.

A street where today they are remembering their most famous neighbor.

He had a a really good long chat with us.

Uh told us all about his time living on Campbell Lane.

um planes flying over during the war, uh putting a firework through our letter box um and being told off by his auntie and hiding in the basement and all sorts of things.

He would stop and talk and chat saw him two or three times uh and he was very good.

He chatted to my son because he likes bit of am uh amateur dramatics.

So he was just a really nice downto-earth guy.

It was theater that was Patrick Stewart’s first love, spending 16 years with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

I can’t wait to get on stage.

You know, actors have heard me muttering, “Come on, come on, get on with it, get on with it.

I want to make my entrance”.

His professional entrance came in a production of Treasure Island at the Lincoln Theater Royal in 1959.

Not only would he act on stage, he would also be involved in the stage management.

So when you became a member of a repatory theater, then you would be involved in all aspects of the show, backstage and onstage.

So it was a really good grounding for him.

In 1967, he got his first television role in Coronation Street.

Why do you ask questions which you already know the answers? His acting career spanned more than six decades.

It earned him countless awards, nominations, and a nighthood.

And what a good actor.

What a really good actor.

I only acted with him once, but um sweet man.

I’m very shocked to hear that.

Fiercely proud of his Yorkshire roots, he was a lifelong Huddersfield Town fan.

The club invited me to become president of the academy, which of course I accepted immediately.

Today, the club paid tribute to his legacy.

He’d come here and everyone get a little bit starruck because it’s a Patrick Stewart, you know, and you know him in whatever guys it is.

He’d see Andy Buu as our club ambassador and get starruck by Andy, you know, which was incredible to see.

and but he’s a just a genuine town fan who idolized the players that he watched.

Patrick Stewart died at the age of 86 in Los Angeles after what was described as a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease.

Today, it’s been a moment of genuine sadness for many in Murfield where he is held in great affection.

It was actually in the same very same class as my mom and my mom’s best friend.

So, they knew each other very well for several years.

So, the same age.

So that’s great sadness that we’ve lost a local person, very famous person.

You were lovely, weren’t you? Very sad indeed.

Yeah, he a good guy down there and uh did a lot for university at Hersfield and stuff like that, but yeah, it’ll be missed.

Bit saddened.

For more than 10 years, he was the chancellor of Huddersfield University.

Far from a purely ceremonial role, he spent time with students.

a new film studio there is already named in his honor.

He came in to do workshops.

He enthused people.

Uh he really engaged with our students and his passion to communicate his skills to the next generation uh was really evident.

Later this year, fans will see Patrick Stewart’s performance in the new Avengers Doomsday film.

Marvel Studios describing him today as a singular talent, generous collaborator, and true gentleman.

But for many, this is his defining role.

In a career which took his character to outer space, Sir Patrick Stewart reflected in his memoir.

Like me, John Luke has lived an unusual life that has taken him far beyond the bounds of normal human experience.

But he is also someone who has remained true to his earthbound roots.
