Percy Jackson’s Creator Hints the Hero’s Story Is Coming to an End — Just as the Show Returns to Disney+

For almost twenty years, Percy Jackson has been one of the most beloved heroes in children’s fiction. Often called the biggest rival to Harry Potter, the son of Poseidon has battled monsters, outsmarted gods and saved Mount Olympus more times than fans can count. Millions of young readers grew up with him, and a new generation is discovering him through Disney+.
But now, author Rick Riordan has dropped a hint that has left many fans heartbroken: Percy’s story may finally be nearing its end.
“No More Stories” for Percy
In a recent conversation with CBR, Riordan suggested that he does not plan to keep writing about Percy Jackson for much longer. According to the interview, the author feels there are simply no more major stories left to tell about the character. He indicated that he is unlikely to continue Percy’s adventures after his current project wraps up.
For longtime readers, the news is bittersweet. Percy first appeared in The Lightning Thief in 2005, and the original five-book series ended with The Last Olympian in 2009. Since then, Riordan has kept bringing him back — as a major character in The Heroes of Olympus, as a guest in The Trials of Apollo, and most recently as the lead of a brand-new series of books.
The Final Senior Year Adventure
That newest series is known as The Senior Year Adventures. It follows Percy during his last year of high school as he tries to earn the letters of recommendation he needs to attend college at New Rome University, the demigod school where he hopes to study alongside his girlfriend, Annabeth Chase.
The first book, The Chalice of the Gods, came out in 2023. The second, Wrath of the Triple Goddess, followed in 2024. Each book sends Percy on a smaller, more personal quest for a god who could write him a recommendation. The stories are lighter and funnier than the original series, but fans loved seeing an older Percy and Annabeth together again.
Riordan has always said that this trilogy would end with a third book. He has also been clear that he does not intend to follow Percy and Annabeth into their college years. In earlier interviews, he explained that his strength is writing for middle-grade readers, and that stories about college-age characters would move too far away from that audience. He did not want to risk ruining the characters by forcing them into a world he does not feel suited to write.
That means the third and final Senior Year Adventures book is very likely to be Percy’s last solo adventure — at least from Riordan himself.
Why the Wait Is So Long
Fans have been waiting a long time for that final book, and they will have to wait a little longer. Riordan has admitted that work on it was paused because of his many other commitments.
The biggest of those is Camp Half-Blood, a new four-book spin-off series announced in May 2026. Instead of writing every book alone, Riordan is teaming up with four different authors, one for each volume. The stories take place at Camp Half-Blood during periods when Percy, Annabeth and Grover were away, and they introduce a fresh group of young demigod heroes. The first book, The Wild Zone, co-written with Annabelle Oh, arrived on September 29, 2026.
On top of that, Riordan has been closely involved in the Disney+ live-action series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, working on scripts and production. He also released The Court of the Dead, a second novel about fan-favorite character Nico di Angelo, written with Mark Oshiro. With so many projects happening at once, the final Percy book kept moving further down the calendar. Earlier estimates suggested it would arrive no sooner than 2027.
The Riordanverse Isn’t Going Anywhere
While Percy may be heading into retirement, that does not mean Riordan is putting down his pen. In fact, his comments suggest the opposite. The author appears to be preparing the way for a new main character to take center stage — and with a new hero usually comes a new set of gods, monsters and myths.
That would not be anything new for Riordan. Over the years, he has built a huge shared world that fans call the “Riordanverse.” Beyond Greek and Roman gods, he has explored Egyptian mythology in The Kane Chronicles and Norse mythology in Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. He also launched a publishing imprint, Rick Riordan Presents, which helped other authors write adventures based on myths from cultures around the world.
The Camp Half-Blood books show exactly how the future may look. Instead of relying on one hero, Riordan seems ready to widen the world and let new characters carry the story, while Percy remains a legendary figure in the background.
A Lesson From Harry Potter
The comparison to Harry Potter makes sense here. J.K. Rowling’s main seven-book story about Harry ended years ago, yet the Wizarding World kept growing through films, plays and spin-offs. Likewise, Percy’s central story is already complete. His big battles are behind him. What is left now is a final, smaller goodbye.
For many readers, that may actually be the best possible ending. Percy has fought Titans, giants and gods. He has lost friends, saved the world and grown from a troubled twelve-year-old into a young man about to start a new chapter of his life. Letting him walk off toward college and a quieter future could be the most fitting reward a hero could get.
The Show Keeps Percy Alive on Screen
Even if the books are winding down, Percy is far from gone. The Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, starring Walker Scobell as Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth and Aryan Simhadri as Grover, has been a big hit with both old fans and new viewers. The show has already been renewed for a third season, which will adapt the third book, The Titan’s Curse.
Riordan has said there is no official decision yet on further seasons, but he and the team are hopeful they will get the chance to adapt all five original novels. If that happens, audiences could be watching Percy’s adventures on screen for several more years, long after his final book hits shelves.
The End of an Era
Nothing has been officially confirmed about Percy’s very last appearance, and Riordan has surprised fans before. But his latest comments make one thing clear: the era of Percy Jackson as the center of the Riordanverse is drawing to a close.
For the readers who grew up with him, saying goodbye will not be easy. Still, Riordan has given them one more adventure to look forward to — and a growing world of new heroes waiting just beyond Camp Half-Blood’s borders.
