“Thomas wasn’t killed in an accident, Clara. He was murdered.”
The words seemed to steal the air from her lungs.
Cole explained that he and Thomas had once worked together, uncovering a scheme involving stolen cattle and forged land deeds.
Before Thomas died, he had discovered evidence that could destroy Silas Crowe.
Then Thomas was found beneath a ravine.
Clara gripped the photograph.
“Why didn’t you come sooner?”
Cole’s face tightened.
“Because the man who killed your husband knows I’m here.”
Suddenly, a gunshot shattered the silence.
Cole pulled Clara behind the barn as a bullet struck the wooden post above them.
Across the pasture, a rider was escaping.
Cole looked at Clara.
“Stay here. Whatever happens, don’t let Crowe get that photograph.”
Then he recognized the rider’s horse—and whispered a name Clara never expected to hear.
