Chapter 2 / 4

CHAPTER 1

For three years, everyone believed Elara had disappeared into the mountains to die.

They were wrong.

She had gone there to live.

Alone.

Far beyond the borders of the Silverpine Pack, past the frozen river and the forests where wolves refused to hunt, stood a tiny stone cottage surrounded by mountains.

Smoke rose from its chimney every morning.

At night, a single lantern glowed beside the window.

That was how people knew the rejected Omega was still alive.

Elara Vale.

The girl her fated mate had publicly rejected.

The girl who had been laughed at during her own mating ceremony.

The girl who had once been expected to become the future Luna.

Instead, she had become a ghost.

No one knew why she had chosen the mountains.

No one except Elara knew the truth.

She had been broken.

And she had refused to let anyone see it.

Three years earlier, on the night of the Moon Festival, Elara had stood beneath hundreds of silver lanterns waiting for her fated mate to claim her.

Alpha Lucian Frost had walked toward her.

Everyone had smiled.

Her heart had raced.

Then he stopped.

His golden eyes were cold.

“I reject you.”

The words had echoed through the courtyard.

Silence.

Then whispers.

Then laughter.

Elara had looked at him as if he had struck her.

“Lucian…”

“I said I reject you.”

His new chosen mate stood behind him.

Beautiful.

Powerful.

Everything Elara wasn’t.

The mark on Elara’s wrist had burned.

Then faded.

The bond was severed.

She had not cried.

Not there.

Not in front of them.

She simply walked away.

That night, she packed a small bag.

At sunrise, she left the pack.

She never returned.

Now, three winters later, Elara had learned how to survive.

She chopped her own wood.

She hunted.

She gathered herbs.

She repaired the roof.

She spoke to no one.

And slowly, painfully, she learned to enjoy the silence.

She had even stopped dreaming about Lucian.

Almost.

Then, one winter evening, the wolves began howling.

Elara froze beside her fireplace.

The sound wasn’t normal.

It wasn’t a hunting howl.

It was a warning.

She walked to the window.

Snow was falling heavily.

Something moved between the trees.

Huge.

Dark.

Slow.

Elara reached for the silver knife beside her door.

The creature emerged from the storm.

A wolf.

No.

A man.

He was enormous.

At least seven feet tall.

Broad shoulders.

Black hair.

A torn cloak covered in snow.

Blood ran down one side of his face.

He stumbled toward her cottage.

Elara stepped backward.

“Stay where you are.”

The stranger stopped.

He lifted his head.

His eyes were silver.

Not the pale silver of ordinary wolves.

Moon-silver.

Royal silver.

Elara’s breath caught.

She knew those eyes.

Everyone did.

The man standing outside her door was the most feared Alpha in the Northern Realms.

King Darius Veyr.

The Alpha King.

He ruled thirteen packs.

His armies had never lost a war.

His name alone could make an Alpha kneel.

And yet he was standing outside Elara’s tiny cottage, bleeding into the snow.

She stared at him.

“What are you doing here?”

His voice was deep.

“Looking for you.”

Elara frowned.

“You don’t know me.”

His eyes remained fixed on her.

“Yes.”

“I’ve never met you.”

He took another step.

“You have.”

“When?”

“Before you remember.”

Elara’s hand tightened around the knife.

“Leave.”

The king didn’t move.

“Elara.”

Her heart stopped.

“How do you know my name?”

He looked at her.

And for the first time, she saw something strange in his expression.

Not anger.

Not authority.

Fear.

“I’ve been searching for you for three years.”

She shook her head.

“Why?”

He opened his mouth.

Then suddenly dropped to one knee.

Elara stared.

The Alpha King was kneeling.

Before her.

“You’re injured.”

“I know.”

“You need a healer.”

“I need you.”

Elara’s heart pounded.

“You’re not making sense.”

Darius looked up at her.

“My wolf has been calling for you every night since you left Silverpine.”

She froze.

“What?”

He swallowed.

“Your scent is the only thing that calms him.”

Elara shook her head.

“No.”

Darius rose slowly.

“I know what you’re thinking.”

“You don’t.”

“You think I’m here because you’re an Omega.”

Her expression hardened.

“Everyone treated me like I was worthless because of it.”

His eyes flashed.

“Then everyone was a fool.”

He reached into his cloak.

Elara lifted the knife.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Then slowly removed a small object.

A silver pendant.

Elara’s breath caught.

She knew it.

Her mother had worn that pendant.

The woman who died when Elara was seven.

The pendant Elara had searched for her entire childhood.

Darius held it out.

“Where did you get that?”

His expression changed.

“Your mother gave it to me.”

Elara stared.

“My mother is dead.”

Darius said nothing.

Her voice shook.

“Isn’t she?”

He looked toward the mountains.

“No.”

The knife slipped from Elara’s fingers.

“What?”

Darius stepped closer.

“She isn’t dead.”

Elara’s entire world seemed to tilt.

“My mother…”

“She is alive.”

“Where?”

Darius hesitated.

“That’s why I came.”

A distant howl echoed across the mountains.

Darius turned sharply.

His expression became deadly.

“They found you.”

“Who?”

He grabbed her hand.

Elara tried to pull away.

“What are you doing?”

“Saving your life.”

“From whom?”

He looked into her eyes.

“The wolves who killed your mother.”

Then the forest erupted with howls.

Dozens of them.

Coming closer.

Darius pulled Elara behind him.

His wolf surged beneath his skin.

Elara stared at the massive figure blocking her door.

The Alpha King.

The most powerful wolf alive.

Protecting her.

Then he whispered something that made her blood run cold.

“They aren’t here for your mother.”

His silver eyes met hers.

“They’re here because you’re her daughter.”

And then the mountain shook.

A black wolf appeared on the ridge above the cottage.

It looked down at Elara.

And bowed.

Not to the Alpha King.

To her.

Darius turned toward it.

His face went pale.

“Elara…”

“What?”

He swallowed.

“Your mother wasn’t just an Omega.”

He looked at the kneeling wolf.

“She was the last Moon Queen.”
