Chapter 3 / 4

CHAPTER 2

And then the mountain gates opened.

Something ancient came crawling out of the darkness.

Something that had been waiting for Elena’s blood to awaken.

The sound was impossible to describe.

It wasn’t quite a growl.

It wasn’t quite a howl.

It sounded like thousands of wolves screaming from beneath the earth.

The mountain shook.

Snow slid from the peaks.

Trees snapped.

Moonriver warriors rushed toward the fortress.

Elena stood frozen.

Ronan grabbed her arm.

“Inside.”

She pulled away.

“No.”

“Elena.”

“You don’t command me anymore.”

His hand dropped.

For five years, he had imagined touching her again.

Now even a simple gesture felt forbidden.

Lucian stepped between them.

“Ronan, take your warriors and leave.”

Ronan stared at him.

“Not without her.”

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

“She doesn’t belong to you.”

“I know.”

The answer surprised both men.

Ronan looked toward Elena.

“She belongs to herself.”

Elena’s expression flickered.

Then another roar shook the valley.

A crack split the ground.

Something black emerged.

The creature was enormous.

Its body looked like a wolf, but its eyes burned silver.

Ancient runes covered its fur.

Every Moonriver warrior stepped back.

Lucian whispered:

“The Hollow Wolf.”

Ronan frowned.

“I thought that was a legend.”

“So did I.”

Elena’s hand began glowing.

The creature lifted its head.

And it spoke.

“QUEEN.”

Elena’s knees weakened.

Ronan caught her.

This time she didn’t pull away.

“What does it want?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

The creature opened its mouth.

“THE BLOOD MUST RETURN TO THE THRONE.”

Then it lunged.

The battle lasted until dawn.

Silverfang warriors and Moonriver wolves fought side by side.

Ronan moved like a storm.

He tore through the Hollow Wolves that followed the ancient beast.

Lucian fought beside him.

Neither man trusted the other.

But both knew Elena mattered more than their rivalry.

At one point, Ronan saw a creature behind Elena.

He shifted instantly.

His wolf crashed into it.

Claws tore through flesh.

Ronan roared.

“Stay away from her!”

Elena turned.

“Ronan!”

He looked back.

Blood covered his shoulder.

She ran toward him.

“Are you hurt?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Don’t lie.”

She touched his wound.

The silver mark on her palm glowed.

Ronan felt warmth spread through his body.

The wound closed.

He stared at her.

“You healed me.”

Elena looked confused.

“I didn’t know I could.”

Lucian approached.

“Because your blood is awakening.”

Ronan looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Lucian answered:

“She isn’t simply a queen.”

Elena stared at him.

“Then what am I?”

Lucian hesitated.

“The last descendant of the First Wolf.”

Silence.

Ronan’s eyes widened.

“The prophecy.”

Lucian nodded.

“The prophecy says the last heir will awaken when the Northern Kingdom is divided.”

Elena looked toward the mountains.

“And the prophecy says?”

Lucian’s face darkened.

“She must unite the packs.”

Ronan stared at Elena.

“And if she doesn’t?”

“The Hollow Wolf will consume the North.”

They returned to Moonriver’s fortress.

The war council gathered.

Maps covered the table.

Ronan stood opposite Lucian.

Elena sat at the head.

She still felt strange there.

Five years ago, she had been terrified of making decisions.

Now six Alpha leaders waited for her command.

“Tell me everything,” she said.

An elder opened an ancient scroll.

“The First Queen ruled the North before the modern packs existed.”

Elena listened.

“She possessed a bloodline that could command the ancient wolves.”

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared.”

“Why?”

The elder looked toward Ronan.

“Because the Blackthorne kings feared her.”

Ronan’s jaw tightened.

“My family?”

“Yes.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

The elder answered:

“Because the First Queen could unite every pack under one crown.”

“And?”

“The Blackthorne dynasty wanted the North divided.”

Silence.

Elena looked at Ronan.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You didn’t?”

“I knew my family had fought the ancient queens. I didn’t know why.”

The elder continued.

“Your mother discovered the truth.”

Elena froze.

“My mother?”

“She wasn’t a healer.”

Elena’s hands trembled.

“What was she?”

“The last surviving guardian of the First Queen’s blood.”

Ronan stared.

“Then Elena’s father…”

“Was a Blackthorne.”

Elena looked at Ronan.

The room went silent.

“What?”

The elder swallowed.

“Your mother married a Blackthorne prince.”

Ronan’s face went pale.

“That means…”

“Yes.”

The elder looked at him.

“Elena’s bloodline is connected to yours.”

Elena stood.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.”

The elder lowered his eyes.

“The prophecy was hidden because it created a terrible possibility.”

“What possibility?”

“The Queen of the North would one day be bound to the Alpha King.”

Ronan stared at Elena.

“Us?”

The elder nodded.

“But the bond was never meant to be forced.”

Elena’s heart pounded.

“Then why did I run?”

The elder looked at her sadly.

“Because someone wanted you to believe the bond was a prison.”

Ronan whispered:

“My father.”

“Yes.”

Elena’s face changed.

Everything suddenly connected.

The conversation.

The wedding.

The secrecy.

Ronan saying her blood had to remain under his control.

She looked at him.

“You knew I was the First Queen’s descendant.”

“No.”

“You knew my blood was powerful.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my family was involved.”

“I knew there was danger.”

“You never told me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You made the decision for me.”

Ronan had no defense.

“Yes.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“That was the problem.”

That night, Elena walked alone through the fortress.

She found Ronan on the balcony.

He was staring at the mountains.

“You should sleep.”

“So should you.”

“I can’t.”

He turned.

“Neither can I.”

Silence.

Then Elena asked:

“Did you love me?”

Ronan looked at her.

“Every day.”

“Even when you rejected me?”

“Especially then.”

She frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

“I was terrified.”

“Of me?”

“Of losing you.”

She shook her head.

“You lost me because you were afraid.”

“I know.”

He looked away.

“I thought if I kept the truth from you, I could protect you.”

“You couldn’t.”

“No.”

He turned back.

“I was wrong.”

Elena’s voice softened.

“I wanted you to trust me.”

“I didn’t know how.”

“And now?”

“Now I know trust isn’t something you give someone after they prove they deserve it.”

He stepped closer.

“It’s something you give them because you choose to build a life together.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“You’ve changed.”

“So have you.”

“I had to.”

Ronan nodded.

“I know.”

For a moment, neither moved.

Then the mate bond pulled them closer.

Elena felt his pain.

His regret.

His love.

But she also felt her own heart.

And it still loved him.

That frightened her.

She stepped away.

“I can’t forgive you yet.”

Ronan nodded.

“You don’t have to.”

“But…”

He waited.

“I don’t hate you anymore.”

His eyes closed.

For Ronan, those five words were more precious than any crown.

The next morning, a messenger arrived.

“The Blackthornes have declared war.”

Ronan’s expression hardened.

“Who leads them?”

The messenger hesitated.

“Your uncle.”

Ronan’s face went cold.

“My uncle is dead.”

“No.”

The messenger shook his head.

“He has been hiding for years.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

The messenger whispered:

“He claims the Northern Crown belongs to him.”

Ronan turned toward Elena.

“This is because of you.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“This is because of the crown.”

Ronan nodded.

“Then we end it.”

The armies met three days later.

Snow covered the battlefield.

Blackthorne banners filled one side.

Moonriver and its allies filled the other.

At the center stood Elena.

She wore silver armor.

The Northern Crown rested on her head.

Ronan stood beside her.

Lucian stood on her other side.

Three powers.

One queen.

The opposing army advanced.

A man rode forward.

Ronan’s uncle.

King Malric.

He removed his helmet.

“Elena Vale.”

She stared at him.

“Malric.”

“You have something that belongs to my family.”

“The crown?”

“Yes.”

“It belonged to the First Queen before your family stole it.”

Malric laughed.

“History is written by the victorious.”

Elena raised her chin.

“Then perhaps history is about to change.”

Malric looked at Ronan.

“You would stand beside her?”

Ronan drew his sword.

“I would die beside her.”

Malric smiled.

“Then die.”

The battle began.

Thousands of wolves collided.

The snow turned red.

Elena’s crown glowed.

Every time she raised her hand, the Northern wolves moved as one.

For the first time in centuries, the North was united.

But Malric had one final weapon.

A dark wolf emerged behind him.

The Hollow Wolf.

It was larger than before.

Its eyes burned.

Malric shouted:

“Kill the Queen!”

The creature charged.

Ronan shifted.

Lucian shifted.

Both wolves attacked together.

But the Hollow Wolf threw them aside.

Elena raised her hands.

“Stop!”

The creature froze.

It looked at her.

“Queen.”

Elena stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

“THE THRONE.”

“You can have it.”

Everyone froze.

Ronan shouted:

“Elena!”

She turned.

“Trust me.”

Then she removed the crown.

The entire battlefield went silent.

She placed it on the ground.

“If the crown is what you want, take it.”

The Hollow Wolf approached.

It lowered its head.

Then suddenly its body changed.

The monster became a woman.

Ancient.

Silver-haired.

Wearing a crown of bones.

Elena stared.

The First Queen.

The woman from the prophecy.

She looked at Elena.

“You finally understand.”

Elena whispered:

“You’re not here to destroy us.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“To test whether you wanted power.”

Elena looked at the crown.

“I don’t.”

The ancient queen smiled.

“Then you are worthy of it.”

She touched Elena’s forehead.

The crown exploded into silver light.

Every wolf in the North fell to its knees.

Then the First Queen turned toward Malric.

“You.”

Malric stumbled backward.

“No.”

“You tried to steal what could only be given.”

She raised her hand.

His crown shattered.

His army dropped their weapons.

The war was over.

But before the ancient queen vanished, she looked at Ronan.

“You rejected her.”

Ronan bowed his head.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Fear.”

“Then what will you do now?”

“Spend my life proving I am no longer ruled by it.”

The First Queen nodded.

“Good.”

Then she looked at Elena.

“He may stand beside you.”

Elena smiled.

“But only if I choose.”

The ancient queen smiled.

“Exactly.”

And then she disappeared.

The battlefield fell silent.

Snow began falling again.

Ronan walked toward Elena.

“Are you all right?”

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“Then what happens now?”

Elena stared at him.

“I don’t know.”

Ronan nodded.

“Neither do I.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

“Good?”

“For once, we can figure it out together.”

Before Ronan could answer, an arrow flew from the distant ridge.

Elena turned.

Ronan saw it too late.

He shoved her aside.

The arrow struck him.

He collapsed.

Elena screamed.

“RONAN!”

She dropped beside him.

Blood covered the snow.

His eyes closed.

The mate bond shattered.

Elena felt the connection disappear.

Her wolf screamed.

She looked toward the ridge.

A hooded figure stood there.

And before fleeing, the stranger shouted:

“The Queen can never rule while the Alpha King still lives!”

Elena looked down at Ronan.

Then at the disappearing assassin.

Her face hardened.

The war might have ended.

But the real battle had just begun.
