CHAPTER 1
HE HUNTED HIS RUNAWAY BRIDE FOR FIVE YEARS… THEN HE CROSSED INTO ENEMY TERRITORY AND FOUND HER SITTING ON A RIVAL ALPHA’S THRONE.
For five years, Alpha King Ronan Blackthorne had searched every forest, every mountain pass, and every hidden wolf settlement in the Northern Kingdom for the woman who had vanished on their wedding night.
Her name was Elena Vale.
She had been his fated mate.
His promised queen.
His bride.
And the only woman who had ever made the ruthless Alpha King lose control of his heart.
Yet five years ago, she had disappeared.
No body.
No message.
No goodbye.
Only one abandoned silver wedding ring found beside the northern road.
Ronan had never accepted that she was dead.
Because somewhere deep inside him, the mate bond still whispered one impossible word.
Alive.
The search had consumed him.
He stopped celebrating victories.
He stopped taking lovers.
He stopped smiling.
Every enemy knew his weakness.
Find Elena Vale, and you could break the Alpha King.
But nobody ever did.
Until now.
Five years earlier, Elena had stood beneath the wedding arch wearing a white gown.
She remembered the way Ronan had looked at her.
His black eyes had softened.
His hand had trembled when he took hers.
“I swear before the Moon Goddess,” he whispered, “I will protect you.”
Elena believed him.
She loved him.
That was why the betrayal destroyed her.
Hours before the ceremony, she had overheard Ronan speaking with his council.
“The marriage must happen tonight.”
“But Your Majesty,” an elder had protested, “the prophecy—”
“I don’t care about the prophecy.”
“What about Elena?”
A pause.
Then Ronan’s voice.
“If the prophecy is true, she must never learn who she really is.”
Elena had frozen outside the chamber.
Her heart had stopped.
Who was she?
Why was Ronan hiding the truth?
Then she heard another voice.
The royal healer.
“Her blood could awaken the ancient power.”
Ronan answered:
“Which is exactly why she must remain under my control.”
Elena’s world collapsed.
She ran.
She didn’t take clothes.
She didn’t take money.
She didn’t even take her wedding ring.
She simply disappeared into the night.
And Ronan believed she had been kidnapped.
He never knew she had heard him.
He never knew she had misunderstood the one conversation that could have saved them both.
Five years later, Elena stood on a balcony overlooking the Moonriver Pack.
She was no longer the frightened young woman who had fled into the darkness.
She wore a deep blue cloak.
A silver crown rested against her dark hair.
Below her, hundreds of wolves waited in the snow.
They bowed.
“Queen Elena!”
Her heart tightened.
She still wasn’t used to the title.
But she had earned it.
When she first arrived in Moonriver territory, the pack had been starving.
Their former Alpha had been murdered.
Their enemies were closing in.
Elena had saved them.
She organized food.
Rebuilt their defenses.
Negotiated peace with neighboring packs.
And when the old council asked her to lead, she accepted.
Not because she wanted a throne.
Because someone had to protect the people who had once protected her.
She had become their queen.
And she had built a life far beyond the reach of the man who had once broken her heart.
At least, she thought she had.
Until the border guards came running.
“Your Majesty!”
Elena turned.
“What happened?”
The guard was pale.
“Blackthorne warriors have crossed the eastern border.”
Her heart stopped.
“Who?”
“Alpha King Ronan.”
Silence.
The name alone reopened wounds she thought had healed.
Elena gripped the balcony railing.
After five years…
He had found her.
Across the valley, Ronan stood beneath the Moonriver banners.
He stared at the fortress.
His wolf was already howling inside him.
Mate.
Alive.
The bond had exploded the moment he crossed the border.
Ronan nearly collapsed.
“She survived.”
His captain looked at him.
“You’re certain?”
Ronan’s eyes burned.
“I would know her heartbeat anywhere.”
He looked toward the fortress.
For five years he had imagined this moment.
He had imagined running to her.
Holding her.
Begging forgiveness.
But he had never imagined the sight before him.
Moonriver’s guards opened the massive gates.
Hundreds of warriors formed two lines.
And between them walked a woman wearing a crown.
Ronan stopped breathing.
Elena.
Older.
Stronger.
More beautiful than the memory he’d carried for five years.
But there was one detail that shattered him.
She wasn’t alone.
A tall Alpha walked beside her.
Alpha Lucian of Moonriver.
Lucian leaned toward Elena.
She smiled.
Ronan’s chest burned.
His wolf snarled.
“That’s my mate.”
His captain whispered:
“Your Majesty…”
Ronan stepped forward.
“Elena!”
The woman stopped.
Slowly, she turned.
Their eyes met across the snowy courtyard.
Five years vanished.
Ronan expected anger.
Tears.
Maybe even fear.
Instead, Elena’s face became completely calm.
She looked at him as though he were a stranger.
“Alpha King Ronan Blackthorne.”
Not Ronan.
Not my love.
Not mate.
The formal title.
Ronan’s heart cracked.
“It’s really you.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you leave?”
Her eyes hardened.
“You know why.”
“I don’t.”
“You will.”
Lucian stepped forward.
“Queen Elena, do you want me to remove him?”
Ronan’s eyes narrowed.
Queen Elena.
The words struck harder than any blade.
Elena looked at Lucian.
“No.”
Then she turned back to Ronan.
“You’ve searched for me for five years.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ronan swallowed.
“Because you’re my mate.”
Elena smiled sadly.
“That stopped mattering when you chose to make me your prisoner.”
“I never—”
She lifted her hand.
“Don’t.”
The silver ring on her finger caught the moonlight.
Ronan stared.
His wedding ring.
The one he had lost.
She had kept it.
His voice broke.
“You still have it.”
Elena looked down.
“I kept it to remember the woman I used to be.”
Ronan’s heart sank.
Then Elena stepped closer.
“There is one thing you need to understand.”
“What?”
“You spent five years hunting your runaway bride.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“But you never thought to ask why she ran.”
Ronan went silent.
Elena turned toward the palace.
“Now you know where I am.”
She paused.
“And you will learn something else.”
“What?”
She looked over her shoulder.
“I am not the runaway bride anymore.”
Then she walked away.
Ronan stared after her.
But before he could follow, an ancient horn sounded from the mountains.
Every warrior in Moonriver dropped to one knee.
Lucian turned toward the northern sky.
Elena’s expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Ronan noticed.
“What is it?”
Elena whispered:
“The prophecy.”
“What prophecy?”
She looked at him.
“The one you were so afraid to tell me about five years ago.”
Ronan’s blood turned cold.
“You heard us.”
“Yes.”
“And you believed I wanted to control you.”
“I heard you say my blood had to remain under your control.”
Ronan shook his head.
“That isn’t what I meant.”
“Then what did you mean?”
He stepped toward her.
“I meant to protect you.”
Elena stared at him.
“From what?”
Before Ronan could answer, the mountain exploded with a roar.
The Moonriver guards drew their weapons.
Lucian shouted:
“Everyone inside!”
The sky turned red.
An ancient howl rolled across the valley.
And from beneath the mountain came a voice neither pack had heard in centuries.
“THE BLOOD OF THE FIRST QUEEN HAS RETURNED.”
Elena’s face went white.
Ronan looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Lucian turned toward him.
“It means the war your family tried to prevent has finally begun.”
Elena looked at Ronan.
And for the first time in five years, she whispered the name she had buried inside her heart.
“Ronan…”
He stepped closer.
“Yes?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“You have to help me.”
And then the mountain gates opened.
Something ancient came crawling out of the darkness.
Something that had been waiting for Elena’s blood to awaken.
