Chapter 2 / 4

Part 1

She Was Supposed to Watch Her Fated Mate Marry Another Woman… Until the Most Feared Lycan King Walked In and Claimed Her Hand 👑🐺

Mara Vale had imagined her fated mate’s wedding a thousand different ways.

In none of those dreams had she imagined standing alone at the back of the cathedral while the man she was destined to love placed a silver ring on another woman’s finger.

The moon had chosen Elias Thorn for her.

The Moon Goddess had marked them both before they were old enough to understand what the mark meant.

For eighteen years, Mara had carried that knowledge like a secret prayer.

Elias had been her first dance.

Her first kiss.

The first person who had ever made her believe that perhaps the lonely little girl who had grown up without a family would one day have a home.

But fate, Mara had learned, could be cruel.

Especially when the person chosen for you had decided he wanted someone else.

Rain hammered the stained-glass windows of Blackthorn Cathedral as Mara stepped inside.

She wore a simple black dress.

Not because she was mourning.

Not officially.

But because white belonged to brides, and Mara refused to pretend she was celebrating.

Hundreds of wolves filled the cathedral.

Alphas.

Betas.

Pack leaders.

Nobles from distant territories.

And every single one of them knew exactly who Mara was.

The discarded mate.

The girl Elias had rejected.

Whispers followed her through the aisles.

“Is that her?”

“She actually came?”

“Poor thing.”

“I heard Elias rejected the bond three months ago.”

“I heard the bride is carrying the future Alpha’s heir.”

Mara kept walking.

Her face remained calm.

Her hands were not.

She curled her fingers around the tiny moonstone pendant at her throat.

The pendant had belonged to her mother.

It was the only thing Mara had left from the woman who had disappeared when Mara was five.

She reached the last row and sat down.

Alone.

Just as she had promised herself she would.

She would not cry.

She would not beg.

She would not ruin Elias’s wedding.

She would simply survive it.

At the front of the cathedral, the enormous doors opened.

Music filled the chamber.

Everyone rose.

Elias appeared first.

He looked devastatingly handsome in black ceremonial armor.

The same armor Mara had once imagined seeing him wear when he came to claim her.

His eyes swept across the room.

For one brief, painful second, they met hers.

Mara saw something there.

Regret.

Then he looked away.

The bride entered.

Selene.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Powerful.

The daughter of the Silvercrest Alpha.

She walked toward Elias beneath a canopy of white roses.

Mara’s chest tightened.

Then the priest raised his hands.

“Elias Thorn,” he said, “do you accept Selene Silvercrest as your chosen mate, your wife, and the future Luna of Blackthorn?”

Silence.

Mara stopped breathing.

Elias looked at Selene.

“I do.”

The words shattered something inside Mara.

Not loudly.

There was no dramatic scream.

No breaking glass.

Just a quiet fracture deep within her chest.

She lowered her eyes.

This is the end.

The priest turned to Selene.

“And do you accept Elias Thorn?”

“I do.”

Applause erupted.

The musicians began playing.

Everyone smiled.

Everyone except Mara.

Then the doors at the back of the cathedral slammed open.

The music stopped.

Every wolf inside turned.

A cold wind swept through the hall.

The torches flickered.

And a scent rolled through the cathedral so powerful that dozens of wolves instinctively lowered their heads.

Fear.

Authority.

Night.

The High King.

Someone whispered his name.

“King Adrian.”

Mara looked up.

He stood beneath the cathedral doors.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dressed entirely in black.

His silver eyes were fixed on her.

Adrian Veyr.

The Lycan King.

The ruler whispered about in every kingdom.

The wolf who had united the northern territories through war.

The Alpha who had never taken a mate.

The man who had reportedly killed an entire rebel council without raising his voice.

He walked forward.

Slowly.

Every step silenced another whisper.

The wolves bowed as he passed.

Mara stared at him, confused.

Why was the Lycan King looking at her?

Then Adrian stopped.

Not beside Elias.

Not beside Selene.

In front of Mara.

He extended his hand.

His voice was low enough to make her heart tremble.

“Come with me.”

Mara stared at his hand.

“I… I don’t understand.”

“You will.”

A murmur swept through the cathedral.

Elias suddenly stepped away from the altar.

“King Adrian,” he said carefully. “This is a private ceremony.”

Adrian didn’t even look at him.

Instead, he kept his eyes on Mara.

“Your ceremony is over.”

Elias’s jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian finally turned.

His silver eyes hardened.

“It means,” he said, “that you made the greatest mistake an Alpha can make.”

The cathedral fell silent.

Elias looked confused.

Adrian returned his attention to Mara.

“You rejected your mate.”

Mara swallowed.

“That isn’t your concern.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

For the first time, something almost gentle appeared in his eyes.

“Oh, little moon,” he whispered.

Mara froze.

No one called her that.

No one except her mother.

Then Adrian reached toward her.

His fingers brushed the moonstone pendant around her neck.

His face went completely still.

“Where did you get this?”

Mara instinctively stepped back.

“It belonged to my mother.”

“What was her name?”

“Lyra.”

The color drained from Adrian’s face.

He looked at the pendant again.

Then at Mara.

Then back at the pendant.

“No,” he whispered.

Mara frowned.

“What?”

Adrian’s breathing changed.

His wolf surged visibly beneath his skin.

He looked as though he had just seen a ghost.

Then he turned toward the entire cathedral.

His voice thundered through the ancient stone walls.

“Everyone out.”

Nobody moved.

Adrian’s eyes flashed silver.

“I said—OUT.”

The doors burst open.

Wolves scrambled away.

But Mara remained frozen.

Elias stepped forward.

“You can’t simply take her.”

Adrian looked at him.

“I can.”

“She’s my—”

Adrian’s growl shook the windows.

“Choose your next words carefully, Alpha Thorn.”

Elias stopped.

Mara’s heart pounded.

She didn’t understand anything.

The Lycan King reached for her hand again.

This time, when she hesitated, he gently closed his fingers around hers.

Heat raced through her body.

The moonstone at her throat began glowing.

A silver mark appeared across Mara’s wrist.

Adrian stared at it.

Then his eyes widened.

“Impossible.”

Mara looked down.

“What is happening?”

Adrian’s voice was barely a whisper.

“The Moon Goddess didn’t send you here to witness his wedding.”

He lifted her hand.

“You were never meant to be his discarded mate.”

Mara’s heart stopped.

“Then why was I?”

Adrian looked toward Elias.

And when he spoke again, the entire world seemed to change.

“Because the bond he rejected was never his.”

Adrian’s gaze returned to Mara.

“It was mine.”

The cathedral erupted in chaos.

And then the Lycan King whispered the words that would change Mara’s life forever.

“You are my fated mate.”

But the next thing he said made every wolf in the cathedral gasp.

“And your mother was the last Queen of the Moon Court.”

Check the comments for Part 2… because Mara has no idea why the most powerful wolf alive has just claimed her—and what he knows about the mother she thought was dead. 👀
