Keanu Reeves Officially Replaces Alan Ritchson in Netflix’s New “Die Hard”-Inspired Thriller
Keanu Reeves is heading into the eye of the storm. The John Wick star has officially been cast as the lead in Maelstrom, Netflix’s upcoming hurricane-set action thriller, taking over the role from Reacher star Alan Ritchson.
The casting was first reported by Page Six and later confirmed by Variety. It gives Netflix one of the most bankable action stars in the world for a project that has spent more than 30 years trying to reach the screen.
“Die Hard in a Hurricane”
Maelstrom is built on a premise that action fans will recognize instantly: one man, one location and an army of bad guys, with no help on the way.
Reeves will play a federal marshal assigned to protect the fiancée of an arms dealer who has turned witness. Their situation turns deadly when a massive hurricane hits, cutting off all communication with the outside world and making it impossible for reinforcements to reach them. Trapped by the storm, the marshal must fight off the arms dealer’s hired men while the hurricane itself becomes a second enemy.
The setup has led many outlets to describe the film as “Die Hard in a hurricane,” a nod to the 1988 classic that turned a single trapped hero into an action-movie template.
Netflix has not yet announced who will play the witness Reeves is protecting, or who will lead the villains.
A Director Who Knows Netflix Thrillers
Maelstrom will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, a filmmaker with a strong track record in tense, contained action films.
Collet-Serra directed Netflix’s Carry-On, starring Taron Egerton as an airport security officer forced to let a dangerous package slip onto a plane on Christmas Eve. The film became one of the streamer’s biggest hits. He also directed Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam and Jungle Cruise, as well as Liam Neeson thrillers like Non-Stop, set almost entirely on a plane, and the shark survival thriller The Shallows.
That experience with high-pressure, single-location stories makes him a natural fit for a film set inside a hurricane.
A Script More Than 30 Years in the Making
One of the most unusual things about Maelstrom is its history.
The project began as a spec script sold to Warner Bros. back in 1993. The sale was arranged by Jeff Robinov, who was then working as an agent. Robinov later rose to become president of Warner Bros. Pictures, but Maelstrom never made it into production there.
Now, more than three decades later, Robinov is bringing the project to Netflix under a new deal. Maelstrom is the first film under that arrangement.
The original draft was written by the late screenwriter Gregory Fitzpatrick. Mark Bianculli, whose credits include the heist thriller How to Rob a Bank, is currently revising the script for a modern audience.
Why Did Alan Ritchson Leave?
Alan Ritchson was the first actor announced for Maelstrom, and his casting made plenty of sense. As the star of Prime Video’s hit series Reacher, Ritchson has become one of the most in-demand action leads in Hollywood. He also starred in Netflix’s military thriller War Machine.
So far, neither Netflix nor Ritchson has explained why he left the project. His reasons remain undisclosed.
Ritchson’s schedule is crowded. He continues to lead Reacher, and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran recently confirmed that the studio has held talks with Ritchson, though he said nothing had come of them yet. There is no indication those conversations had anything to do with his departure.
Keanu Reeves’ Busy Action Slate
For Reeves, Maelstrom adds another major action project to an already packed schedule.
The 62-year-old actor has spent more than a decade building John Wick into one of the most successful action franchises in modern cinema. He is also attached to a long-awaited Constantine sequel and to a live-action adaptation of BRZRKR, the comic book series he co-created, which Netflix is developing alongside an anime series.
Reeves has worked with Netflix before, in the romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe, where his self-parodying cameo became one of the most talked-about moments of 2019, and in the drama To the Bone.
Some fans have pointed out that Maelstrom is a chance for Reeves to step outside the elaborate mythology of John Wick and into a more grounded, old-school action thriller, the kind of role that first made him a star in films like Speed and Point Break in the early 1990s. Maelstrom, fittingly, was written in that same era.
When Will Maelstrom Be Released?
Netflix has not announced a production start date or release date. With the script still being revised and the rest of the cast yet to be announced, industry watchers expect it won’t arrive on the streamer until 2028 at the earliest.
A Perfect Storm for Netflix
Netflix has had great success with mid-budget action thrillers in recent years, and Carry-On proved that Collet-Serra can deliver a crowd-pleasing hit for the platform. Pairing him with Keanu Reeves, and a premise built around a hurricane siege, gives the streamer a strong chance at another one.
Ritchson’s fans may be disappointed not to see the Reacher star in the role. But if Maelstrom lives up to its “Die Hard in a hurricane” promise, audiences are unlikely to mind seeing Keanu Reeves fight his way through the storm instead.
